After the tragic death of Whitney Houston in 2012, news emerged that the long-awaited musical version of her hit film The Bodyguard would finally go into production. The Bodyguard Musical London opened on 5 December 2012, with previews beginning on 6 November.
The musical follows the same plotline as the 1992 movie, following a music superstar Rachel Marron who is forced to hire a bodyguard named Frank after receiving death threats from an obsessive fan. Despite their differences, Rachel and Frank fall in love, even as they find themselves in escalating danger. The film still holds the title for the best-selling soundtrack of all time, and “I’m Every Woman,” “Jesus Loves Me,” “Queen of the Night,” and “Run to You” all feature in the musical in addition to perhaps its most famous song, “I Will Always Love You.” Additional songs from the Houston back catalogue are also featured, including “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “Saving All My Love for You.”
The production is directed by Thea Sharrock, who most recently directed The Sunshine Boys and Equus in the West End.
Following in Houston’s considerable footsteps is Broadway star Heather Headley. She won a Tony Award for originating the role of Aida in the hit musical by Elton John and Tim Rice. She also won a Grammy Award for her album Audience of One. Taking on the role of Frank Farmer, played by Kevin Costner in the film, is Lloyd Owen, a West End veteran whose credits include Closer, Iphigenia, Julius Caesar, and The York Realist.
