Matilda the Musical
One of the West End’s biggest recent successes is Matilda the Musical, which has been packing in audiences since it opened in 2011. Winning more Olivier awards than any other production in history, including Best New Musical, it has taken up residence at London’s Cambridge Theatre for the indefinite future and will open on Broadway in 2013.
Based on the classic children’s book by Roald Dahl, Matilda follows a young girl with a love of reading who is bullied by her nasty television-obsessed parents and her even nastier headteacher Miss Trunchball, who has a penchant for flinging children over the schoolyard walls by their hair. Matilda finds special powers within herself that enable her to create the life she has always dreamed of. With witty music and lyrics by Australian comedian Tim Minchin and a book by Dennis Kelly, this dazzling, mischievous, and inspiring musical is one of the best shows in town. The production is directed by Matthew Warchus, designed by Simon Barker, choreographed by Peter Darling, with sound design by Simon Baker. All four of these members of the creative team won Olivier Awards for their work on Matilda.
Four young actresses alternate the title role: Lucy-Mae Beacock, Hayley Canham, Chloe Hawthorn, and Lara Wollington. The adult cast of Matilda is led by David Leonard as the malicious Miss Trunchbull, with Steve Furst and Annette McLaughlin as her terrible parents Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood. Haley Flaherty plays her loving teacher Miss Honey.
