Rebecca the Musical is set to take the London stage by storm later this year – if it can find a venue. The classic 1938 Daphne Du Maurier novel is being turned into a musical that will hopefully open at the end of 2011 once a suitable theatre is found. Producers first wanted to open at the Shaftesbury Theatre, but an ancient, underground steam was discovered after a test drilling, as part of the set in the show needs to rise up from the foundations of the building. If an appropriate venue cannot be found in time, then Rebecca will first open on Broadway before the West End.

In line for the starring role as the leading lady, ‘Mrs. De Winter’, is Sierra Boggess, currently playing Christine Daae in Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s follow-up to The Phantom of the Opera. Boggess has been nominated for ‘best actress in a musical’ at this year’s Olivier Awards and took part in a read-through for Rebecca last week. It is thought that she is likely to play lead role.
